Where Rita shares about joining the Air Force at 19, leaving an Ohio farm to attend the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA and learned 4 years of college-level language in one year -- while working to qualify for a top-secret clearance!

Further challenges awaited at the base in Germany where I worked 24/7 shift work -- 365 days each year on a grueling rotating schedule in a building with no windows!

The job of translator had been held by men only until just a generation before mine, so there were still people getting used to having women on the job and in that work environment.
